‘Town’s squad is better than rivals Leeds!’

opponents. However, their view doesn’t align with that of Hodgkinson, who owns 75% of the Terriers.

He, in fact, believes that Huddersfield have better players than Leeds United but need time to develop a system and philosophy as the Whites have.

Hodgkinson told podcast And He Takes That Chance: “The ambition for the club is there but you have to accept...it’s not a money thing.

“When we got promoted we got promoted because we had a manager who had a system that was better than the players we had, which is what is happening at Leeds.

“Bielsa’s way of playing [is better than that squad]. If you look at that Leeds game, if you cut those two squads together, I would not say, in my personal opinion, that Leeds have got better players than us barring one or two.

“I believe we’ve got better players in most positions.

“But on the day the way they played, they just outplayed us, it was the way they played.

“That’s no criticism of our manager at all, quite the opposite, but they just had a better system.”

Meanwhile Phil Hodgkinson admits he is in two minds about the financial implications the suspension of the football season might have.

The Terriers’ majority owner admits that the ‘equalisation’ that it might cause would impact clubs in the short term – Town included – but could be for the overall good of the game in the longer term.

Speaking again on podcast And He Takes That Chance, Hodgkinson said: “The longer this goes on the longer everyone is going to want to hang on to their cash. What if there’s no transfer window? What if there is a transfer window but no-one’s spending? Because a large proportion of our projected revenue for next season was based on transfers.

“That will be the case for the vast majority of clubs outside the Premier League and some in it. The vast majority of your projected income is based on player sales.

“Now, we’re still in that fortunate position that there’ll be no fire sale, but for those club we’re talking about to survive they will need all of their players to take wage deferrals or even not be paid for a while, and how many footballers are going to want to do that?”

Asked whether he anticipates that the transfer bubble might burst as a result of the current crisis, Hodgkinson replied: “Noone really knows.

“Potentially it can be a bad thing; short term if that happened it would be a bad thing for a lot of clubs including us, but medium-longer term it’s a good thing because there
