Failed Toffee loan leaves no sour taste for Terriers

does need to be an equalisation.

“The amount of money even at our level that people get paid and that you pay for transfers, it’s gone crazy over the last 15-20 years hasn’t it, let’s be honest.

“On the one hand, as a football club owner I don’t really want that to happen because it could have a negative effect on us, definitely, that worst-case scenario.

“But on the other hand as a supporter, actually would it not be nice to have a situation where we go back to a scenario going back 25 years where football was a more level playing field and it was more about ability and how good your manager was rather than how much you could spend on wages and transfer fees?

“It’s a double-edged sword.”

TOWN have made no secret of the fact that had Aaron Mooy left the club earlier in the summer last year, Everton youngster Kieran Dowell would have been the man to replace him.

The attacking midfielder was seen as an ideal replacement for the Australian, who eventually left on loan to Brighton on the summer transfer deadline day.

By then Dowell’s agent had arranged for him to move to Derby County instead. In fact, Dowell ended up going head-to-head with Mooy on the opening day of the season at the John Smith’s Stadium, and it was he who brought down Juninho Bacuna for a penalty Karlan Grant duly dispatched.

Dowell might well have filled a hole once Danny Cowley arrived at Town, but the suggestion from his time at Derby is that perhaps he wouldn’t have been the number 10 Cowley required.

He failed to make an impact in his six starts at the beginning of the season and was dropped to the bench for much of the rest of his time at Derby, which was brought to a premature end in January.

Dowell did start well at Wigan, whom he joined immediately after his Derby loan was terminated, but an ankle injury ended his run in the side.

Meanwhile, Town were finally getting Alex Pritchard back up to fitness when the season was put on hold and have been very much enjoying the services of Arsenal loanee Emile Smith Rowe.

Who knows if that move would ever have come off if Dowell had been in the squad?
