Ways to get help if in self-isolation

THE Huddersfie­ld community is rallying round one another to help during these toughest of times.

Almost every area now has a support group set up to help those who are ill or need to self-isolate.

The elderly and the vulnerable are self-isolating for three months which is why these support groups are badly needed and they have already been contacted by relatives from around the world asking them to help their elderly loved ones who are lonely and isolated here in Huddersfie­ld.

Groups are set up for Greenhead, Lindley, Almondbury, Dalton, Ashbrow, Crosland Moor, Golcar and Colne Valley, Kirkburton, Denby Dale, Holme Valley North and Holme Valley South.

Martin has a background supporting people with mental health and substance use, who are also homeless or at risk of homelessne­ss. Rheme is a person-centred counsellor. They are offering help to anyone from anywhere.

Madihah Ahmad has a disclosure DBS for children and adults and is volunteeri­ng to help the over 70s, the most vulnerable (any age group) and any key workers who require food, shopping or pick-ups. Madihah is bilingual speaker who can speak English, Punjabi and Urdu and will do anything to help the community. Kirklees has developed a co-ordinated community response, including a Kirklees Council helpline and online forms that anyone can use to either request help or to offer support to others. One of the administra­tors, Michelle Bennett, said the area has around 12,000 homes and the group now has 733 members. Leaflets have been delivered with phone numbers for volunteers on them. The volunteers can help with things like shopping, a friendly phone call, posting mail and collecting medication. People can post a message for help on the group’s Facebook page.

A group is based at Longwood Mechanics Hall to help elderly and vulnerable with shopping, picking up prescripti­ons, benefits claims or just a friendly chat. Co-ordinator is Zoe Greensmith on 07900 157094.

Netherton Community Help Group wants to help anyone they can to make sure they have what they need at all times. This especially includes the elderly, disabled, pregnant women, the vulnerable or anyone who has had to self-isolate. They also need more helpers.

A food wholesaler which is normally only open to trade caterers such as pubs, cafes and restaurant­s is now serving the public. Golcar Covid-19 Mutual Aid

This covers Golcar and Scapegoat Hill and the co-ordinator is Jane Smith. An emergency group has been set up in the rural areas in HD8 co-ordinated by the Denby Dale Centre which includes Time Together, Community Transport, The Kirkburton Hub and DDC Training Centre.

Called Up My Street: HD8, this emergency community and volunteer service offers food parcel deliveries, pet food delivery, a daily phone call services and local volunteer dog walks. Volunteers are subject to safeguard checks.
