AN INQUEST has opened after former Huddersfield Town footballer Jordan Sinnott died in an incident in Retford.

Mr Sinnott died in Queen’s Medical Centre following an alleged assault in Market Place on January 25, 2020.

His body was officially identified by his mother, with the footballer passing away at the Nottingham hospital at around 6pm the same day.

Nottinghamshire Police launched an investigation into the death of the 25-year-old, who was a footballer at Matlock Town FC and also had spells at Chesterfield, Huddersfield Town and Alfreton Town.

Opening the inquest via video link at Nottingham’s Council House on May 6, assistant coroner Jonathan Straw confirmed the footballer’s age, date of death and the results of a postmortem examination.

The inquest was adjourned to a further date pending the outcome of a criminal trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

Mr Straw said: “This inquest is touching upon the death of Jordan Sinnott, born on February 14, 1994, who died in the Queen’s Medical Centre following an incident in Retford on January 25, 2020.

“A family identification was made by his mother Melanie Tate, and a postmortem examination undertaken showed the provisional cause of death at this stage was one of a head injury.

“This inquest will now be adjourned to a later date pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.”

In a statement issued by Nottinghamshire Police, Mr Sinnott’s family paid tribute to the footballer.

The statement said: “Just before 6pm on January 25, 2020, our hearts were completely broken when we said our goodbyes to Jordan.

“Jordan was the love of our life. He was kind, gentle, funny and lived his life to the full each and every day.

“He was a true gentleman. He absolutely loved his football and from an early age we knew he was determined and driven to succeed.

“Nothing will ever be the same again without Jordan in our lives. It will leave a void that can never be filled.”

Two men are due to appear in Nottingham Crown Court later this year charged with manslaughter, affray and common assault in connection with Mr Sinnott’s death.

Cameron Matthews, 21, of Denman Close, Retford, and Kai Denovan, 22, of Collins Walk, Retford, remain in custody ahead of the trial on July 20.

A third man, 21-year-old Sean Nicholson, of Beechways, Retford, pleaded guilty to affray. He will be sentenced when the case is complete.
