Council gives £1,000 boost to vital services
HOSPICES, a community centre and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance are all set to benefit from donations from Kirkburton Parish Council.
The money was gifted after the council employed technology to meet remotely.
Kirkwood Hospice, the Forget-Me-Not Children’s Hospice, Denby Dale Centre and Yorkshire Air Ambulance each received £1,000 from the newly established Emergency Donations Fund.
It is geared towards supporting organisations that are providing services to Kirkburton Parish Council residents during the Covid-19 crisis.
By setting up remote meetings - and holding four during April the council moved its business forward.
That included approving eight grants to assist village clubs and organisations to deliver projects to improve their facilities and funding for 13 projects, promoted by councillors, as part of the council’s Village Improvement Fund.
Clr Steve Beresford, chair of the parish council, said he was pleased that it had stepped up and was providing financial assistance to “very worthy causes”.
He added: “I know that a lot of local people are volunteering their time and expertise to help, so it’s great that the parish council can also play its part.”
Following the Government’s decision to issue emergency legislation to allow parish councils such as Kirkburton to meet remotely it intends to hold virtual meetings on the first Thursday of the month from June 4.
The public are able to join in and contribute at the start of the meeting, and can listen to the rest of the debate should they wish, in a similar way as at conventional meetings.
