Cowley and Co on countdown to kick-off after lockdown

-

The original plan was to return to training today, but on Thursday the EFL delayed that until May 25.

“We have regular contact with the players, at least twice a week,” said the Town boss.

“On the Friday we found out the game against Wigan wasn’t going ahead, we gave the boys a tough training session and off the back of that we set them up with an app, a GPS and heart-rate belt at home so we can keep track on what they are doing.

“Before we went on lockdown the kit man and his team were able to get equipment out to the players so they have bikes and gym equipment.

“We did a zoom call this week on they were all on their bikes. It was supposed to be a rest day but it looked pretty intense to me.

“We have tried to increase the social dynamic this week and the competitive edge, and next week we are looking to introduce some balls with a view to working towards the date the EFL have given us at this point to return.”

If the season does resume, Town do so sitting in 18th in the Championship, but just three points clear of the relegation zone with nine games remaining.

In that respect, Danny’s brother Nicky – who is also his assistant manager – wouldn’t mind if the season was brought to a close with no more games played.

However, he understands why the league should try to get the campaign completed. He said: “We have a really big task this season to maintain our status.

“We don’t know when the season will start again, but maybe from a selfish point of view we will be happy for the season to finish now as we are out of the relegation zone!

“But on a moral level, with managing Lincoln last season when we were top, if the season had ended we would have felt distraught having done all the hard work (and not been promoted). “The right thing for the game is for the season to finish and I hope that happens, then we can look ahead to next season with a fresh start and outline all of our objectives to the staff and players.”

During the lockdown, the pair have had time to look at future recruitment of players.

And Danny has revealed they have taken a big interest in Bundesliga 2 – Germany’s second division – which resumes this weekend
