Nicky’s up for survival challenge
NICKY Cowley says part of the attraction to him and brother Nicky arriving at Huddersfield was taking on the unknown.
The Cowleys arrived at Town in September with the club in a wretched place.
Freshly relegated from the Premier League and looking like they were about to suffer a second successive drop, the Cowleys had their work cut out.
Slowly but surely they have steadied the ship with the side out of the relegation places before the coronavirus outbreak halted the Championship in mid-March.
“It was part of the attraction for us,” said assistant Nicky.
“We’d never exposed ourselves to stepping into a club during the season.
“You put yourselves in a position where you have to form new relationships with all members of staff and players.
“That was really interesting to understand what the club had been through and what the journey had been.
“Once we saw the challenge to try to keep them in the division - it was a challenge we embraced and looked forward to taking.
“We’re in a strange situation right now, but with nine games to go we’re working towards maintaining our status.”
Nicky also touched on the pair’s desire to continue developing players - regardless of their age. He added: “I’m a great believer in coming into a club and working where the strengths are. Obviously there’s things you want to improve. There’s always development to be had. I really enjoy developing players. It used to be harder doing that at part-time level in non-league. But now we get to see players on a daily basis.”
