Twin it to win it! Pair sign new Giants deals

LOUIS AND INNES ‘HAVE RUGBY WORLD AT THEIR FEET’ SAYS WOOLFORD

HUDDERSFIELD Giants may be facing a tough few years ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic, but they are planning for the future by today tying down Louis and Innes Senior on new contracts.

The Huddersfield-born twins, who turn 20 at the end of this month, have come through the academy together and have now signed deals which will take them to at least the end of the 2021 season.

The wingers were ever-presents in the Giants’ BetFred Super League squad last year, with Innes making 18 appearances and scoring four tries and Louis playing 13 times and scoring eight tries – four of which came on the unforgettable final day comeback win against Catalans Dragons.

And with cash likely to be tight for the Giants following the lockdown and with no date yet set for a resumption of the Super League season securing the futures of two of the club’s best young talent is a key move for the club.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Huddersfield Giants so far and have managed to get a lot of game time in recent times,” said Louis.

“I played pretty much the whole of the second half of last season and have only missed out on a couple of games this year so far, so I’m happy with the progression I’m making with the Giants, which has made this contract extension easy to sign.”

And despite the financial plight hitting Super League, Innes says he believes the future is bright for the Giants.

He said: “I’ve been enjoying my rugby at Huddersfield Giants for a long time so it felt natural to sign an extension.

“I’m excited for the future of the club, especially with the squad we’ve got at the moment.

“I feel like we’ve got the best squad we’ve had since I made my debut so I’m excited to see what we can accomplish!”

The pair, who live in the same house, have been able to workout together during lockdown, but admit it hasn’t been easy.

Said Louis: “We’ve been training hard during this time and managed to put some muscle on but still miss all the gym equipment and it’s hard to do much rugby training with only two people.”

And Innes, who like his brother has been furloughed by the club like most of the Super League players, added: “Me and Louis have managed to maintain a pretty good training schedule since lockdown and I’ve always got a training partner so I’m able to continue working on a lot of aspects of my game already.

“I know I’ll be in a good condition for when the time arrives for me to start our second pre-season.”

The brothers made their Giants debuts four days apart over Easter in 2018. And head coach Simon Woolford believes the pair have everything they need to have successful Super League careers. He said: “Louis and Innes are very significant retentions for our club.

“They’ve come along nicely over the last two years and I’d expect to see continued improvement both physically and mentally.

“They have all the tools - big, strong, fast, they really do have the rugby league world at their feet.

“How far they go in this game will be purely dictated by Louis and Innes.

“They’re great lads to coach and we look forward to working with them for the next 18 months.”
