MOTORISTS face months of delays as major parts of the A629 Calderdale Way Huddersfield-to-Halifax route are closed so improvements to the road surface can be carried out.

A programme of work from Ainley Top roundabout to the A6026 Wakefield Road at the Calder and Hebble junction will be carried out by Calderdale Council from May 26.

The work involves the planing and resurfacing of the carriageway surface, plus maintenance of safety barriers, street lighting and drainage.

The road will be split into four sections, each of which will be closed for a three-week period for the safety of road users and the workforce.

The work is due to be completely finished by Friday, August 14.

Calderdale Council says the 24/7 closure option was chosen in preference to overnight closures, due to the reduction in the amount of traffic on the roads at present.

This will reduce the overall length of the works from 18 weeks to 12 weeks and minimise disruption for neighbouring residents.

The closure sections will be as follows:

Section 1 – Northbound: Ainley

Top roundabout to Elland figure of eight junction closed Tuesday, May 26 to Friday, June 12

Section 2 – Northbound: Elland figure of eight junction to Calder and Hebble junction closed Monday, June 15 to Friday, July 3

Section 3 – Southbound: Calder and Hebble junction to Elland figure of eight junction closed Monday, July 6 to Friday, July 24

Section 4 – Southbound: figure of eight junction to Ainley Top roundabout closed Monday, July 27 to Friday, August 14.

Signed diversions will be in place via Elland-Riorges Link.

Workers will be following strict government guidance and will maintain a two-metre distance throughout (or will be working in pairs if this isn’t feasible). Strict hygiene regulations will also be followed, such as regular hand washing.

Access for emergency vehicles and pedestrians (where normally permitted), will be maintained at all times.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Resources, Clr Jane Scullion, said: “This major route into Halifax is one of the busiest roads in the borough.

“This essential work will ensure the road surface is fit for purpose and reduce the need for further repair work in future.

“The work has been scheduled for some time, but we’re taking advantage of the quieter roads to complete the work more quickly. Workers will be adhering to strict COVID-19 safety measures throughout.

“The work will be split into sections to minimise disruption, however, we ask those who need to travel to allow extra time for their journey, to take into account the necessary diversions.

“We’re aware that this is also a key road for Calderdale Royal Hospital, so access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.”
