Mosque’s generous gift for PPE at hospice
VULNERABLE patients at Huddersfield’s hospice have been protected thanks to fundraising by a mosque.
Kirkwood Hospice has been given £1,500 by the Ghausia mosque in Lockwood, as members and supporters continue their charity drive during Ramadan.
They have already donated thousands towards feeding nurses at HRI at the start of the coronavirus crisis, followed by a significant donation to Newsome’s Hope Food Bank.
Now their cash has been used to buy PPE for workers at the hospice in Dalton.
Mosque member Istikhar Aziz liaised with the hospice to make this possible.
A spokesperson for the mosque said: “The hospice was thrilled by the gesture as the donation will be used to purchase much-needed PPE items which will enable the staff and the volunteers to safely carry out the excellent care which they provide.
“The Ghausia mosque and Kirkwood Hospice have planned to work collaboratively in the future to support the hospice with fundraising and encouraging volunteers from the Muslim community to actively get involved with the hospice.”
Michael Crowther, Kirwood chief executive, said: “All the donations will go toward ensuring that we can continue to provide our services during the crisis, with many of our income streams under massive pressure at the moment. That includes making sure we have the right PPE, enough nurses to provide care and the right equipment.
“We would like to say a big thank you to our friends at the Markazi Jamia Masjid Ghausia Mosque in Lockwood for their generous donation of £1,500.
“This donation comes at a really important time, as the impact of coronavirus means that our sources of income are under greater pressure than ever. “Throughout the crisis, we are standing side by side with our NHS partners to make sure that the most vulnerable people in our local community continue to receive the very best care as they approach the end of life.
The chairman of the mosque, Mohammed Rafiq, was accompanied by the Imam Umar Hayat Qadri along with Mohammed Riaz Abdul Aziz, Imran Ashraf and Nasar Mahmood to present the funds.
