We’re all in this together... in Home Counties that is

IT’S Friday, May 15 and almost two months into the lockdown.

At 1500hrs a Downing Street spokesman (why do we never get an actual name?) states that the Government is actively considering relieving the lockdown on a regional basis.

This is on the day London records only 24 new cases and could be two weeks away from being virus free. So this would assume London could come out of lockdown pretty quick with the rest of the country remaining.

Whilst this seems good news where does this leave “we’re all in this together and we’re going to level up the country’’?

Especially when it was obvious to anybody with more than a pea between their ears that London should have been locked down two weeks earlier than the rest of the country to minimise the spread of the virus from what was the Covid hot spot.

Yet again another decision from a government which can see no further than the Home Counties... following the science my @?$€.

An ‘apology’ from the negative BBC

OWING to unprecedented levels of illness in our largest section – The Negativity Department – we will be unable for the meantime to deliver our usual stream of distorted, unhelpful and depressing news.

Instead we are being forced to bring our bona fide journalistic team out of “retirement” (they were let go because they responded to the mood of the nation, rather than do what they were told). It is likely they will make a positive contribution to the national effort to get through this crisis, against our instructions. You must therefore be prepared to hear and see evidence of hope, optimism and faith in our country.

We apologise for this substantial glitch in our service and promise you, our audience, this is a temporary measure. Our normal output of nit-picking, retrospectoscope-powered criticism, scaremongering and unbridled negativity will resume as soon as circumstances permit.

Change we need, but without pointscoring

MY hope after Covid-19 has been suppressed is that we as a country restart anew. The Government should look at our economy and encourage more manufacturing, fully utilise farming land and protect our fishing industry. The country needs to be more self-sufficient. We need a return to full employment and if our goods are slightly more expensive so be it. What is the cost to the public purse with cheap imports when you take into account our unemployment costs which they fuel?

Our country needs to be less reliant on other countries for goods especially vital goods. I stopped knowingly buying goods made/produced in France some years ago and I have added to that list China

Will change happen? I hope so but I am saddened that at the moment all political parties just wish to tear our government to shreds rather than be united in one single aim. Afterthoughts and retrospective suggestions can be thrown like confetti when the situation has passed.

Would lives have been saved had some situations been handled differently, who knows. I had hoped that Keir Starmer was going to be more pragmatic when he stood up at the despatch box or spoke to the news media. Sadly he is making political points scoring his agenda as others are.
