Neville fears there will be ‘economic carnage’ in EFL

Goodison Park? If Stekelenburg remains then Lossl would have to be content with third choice once more it seems.

Pickford won’t be displaced and game time will prove hard to come by again for the Dane.

What does that do for his Euro 2021 hopes? Dislodging Kasper Schmeichel as national No.1 seems far fetched at this time, Lossl having just the solitary cap to his name, but he will have competition for places, not least with Frederik Ronnow of Eintracht Frankfurt and Jesper Hansen of FC Midtjylland.

Lossl will need to be playing to push ahead of those two for a space in the squad next summer and given his performances at Huddersfield past and present, it seems to be a perfect fit for him to do so moving forward.

His wages, certainly in the current financial climate of Championship football, would likely prove a stumbling block once more, although he’s already demonstrated his commitment to the cause in that respect already.

Town chief exec Mark Devlin has previously acknowledged that Lossl is unlikely to stay into next season, largely owing to wages, which could open the door next season to Joel Coleman, Ryan Schofield or even an extended stay for another loanee, Liverpool’s Kamil Grabara.

But Lossl will need games again he if wants to force Hjulmand’s hand next summer. Why not get them at Town?

FORMER Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes many EFL clubs will be forced into administration as a result of a lack of Premier League funding due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Over the weekend Huddersfield Town chairman Phil Hodgkinson expressed his fear that as many as ‘50 or 60’ EFL clubs could go under and that there would be ‘no football pyramid’ unless a suitable financial agreement is reached.

The EFL faces a black financial hole of £200m by September, according to chairman Rick Parry.

The economical strain at the bottom of the football pyramid has led to League Two clubs curtailing their season, while there is a clear divide in the League One over whether to follow suit.

Neville, who is co-owner of League Two Salford City, has voiced his disapproval of how the Premier League has handled the situation and believes their short-sighted approach could force EFL clubs into administration.

“From day one, I’ve said it will be July, August, September, October where the real pressure comes,” Neville said.

“Clubs have a loss at the moment from the games that have been cancelled this season. I think League One clubs will vote to end the season and they will end up with the playoffs, similar to League Two.

“Richard Masters (Premier

League chief executive) did an interview that was slipped in over the weekend with the BBC. He said he wouldn’t be putting together a short-term funding package in the coming months because he was focusing on the Premier League clubs.

“That’s what I’m seeing all the way over football, everyone is looking at their own feet and not seeing economic carnage that is coming over the next three to four months.

“I wanted more from the Premier League from day one on this, I’m continually disappointed by them and their stance. What the Huddersfield owner says is quite alarming, I don’t think it will be 50, 60 clubs, personally.

“I don’t see any of that but he may be closer than I am. I think there will be clubs considering going into administration just to basically save themselves. Then there’s the situation with how the league deal with that. I think there is a looming nightmare economically for the EFL clubs.”

The EFL will be there to fend for itself and it doesn’t look like it will get any funding. There was a suggestion it could be a government bail-out but I was nervous about that, the government has enough industries to look after.

“I think we do need to see some support for football clubs or we will see them go into administration and that would be a real shame. The Premier League don’t see it as their responsibility or their urgent responsibility at this moment of the time.”
