MP reveals plan to help EFL clubs
AN MP has confirmed that he is writing to Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden, the FA and the EFL calling for urgent talks to address the financial crisis facing football.
Damian Collins (pictured), a Member of Parliament for Folkestone and Hythe, has also outlined a six-point plan for how he believes those in power should look to address the financial crisis facing football due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The plan has the backing of 18 MPs, two former FA chairs, the Football Supporters’ Association and the chair and co-owner of two EFL clubs.
Collins’ proposals seek to establish a Football Finance Authority (FFA) which would be created by the FA and backed by the Government.
The move would put supporters at the heart of football governance and, in some circumstances, club ownership, and could also provide financial support to clubs but there are a number of important conditions that must be met.
Any funds would be for operational liabilities only and must not be used to finance transfers or infrastructure spending.
But in return for receiving funds clubs would have to give minority shareholdings to nominated bodies such as supporters’ trusts.
