Wedding woe at the double for nurse on frontline in Covid battle

PANDEMIC SCUPPERS BIG DAY, NOW VENUE GOES BUST

A HUDDERSFIELD Royal Infirmary nurse on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis has been left wondering if she’ll ever get married after her wedding plans were dashed twice in a matter of weeks.

Like many brides-to-be, Fran Senior had been looking forward to her big day this summer for years when it was cruelly scuppered by the lockdown.

But unlike most, when the Covid-19 infected patients began to flood through the doors of hospitals, she had little time to make new plans as she was in the thick of the suffering and tragedy.

In recent weeks with fewer patients being covid positive and the lockdown being eased, Fran and her fiancee were finally starting to look to the future after a tough few months.

She was delighted after she managed to re-book her original venue for June next year.

But that too has now gone up in smoke after the venue - The Old Golf House Hotel at Outlane went bust.

To make things worse, Fran, who lives in Brighouse, found out second hand on Facebook and missed a number of calls from the hotel while she was busy treating coronavirus patients.

Last week an employee of the hotel revealed her heartache for all those due to get hitched at the venue.

She said: “To all the lovely couples I have worked with on planning your special day at the Old Golf House. I have just seen this myself and I would like to say how sorry I am that this is the situation you are in and that you have found out in this way.

“As of Tuesday all employees have

Fran, 27, said she was now wondering if it would be years before she could find a suitable venue to get married to her fiancee Aaron Burnside, who she met at work more than seven years ago.

She said their £1,000 deposit was on the line but they were thankful they hadn’t paid the remaining £5,500, which had been due just days after the virus lockdown began.

She said: “I was happy to rebook for next summer. We sorted it out only four weeks ago and none of this was mentioned.

“I specifically asked them about it as I’d seen the stories last year about them going into administration and they said it will be fine.

“We would have been just 20 days from our wedding today and I’m now wondering if we’ll ever find anywhere.

“Everyone that’s been delayed this year will be re-booking for next year so there’s no spaces left.

“I’ve been emailing places but obviously you can’t go and look at anything.”

The devastating news comes after a tough few months for Fran, who was re-deployed from her normal role at Huddersfield Royal

Infirmary to the respiratory ward at Calderdale Royal, where all the patients have been covid-19 positive.

Working long shifts in heavy duty PPE she has been emotionally and physically drained.

“It’s been emotional,” she said. “It’s been a tough ride, there’s been some very sad times but also some good ones when patients you didn’t think would make it got to go home.

“We’ve had patients in induced comas for 50 days who are now back home like nothing ever happened.

“We had some really poorly people who we didn’t think were ever going to make it, but they did.”
