Cowley has to end this set-piece misery

- By DAVE POWELL

IT’S not been the best of campaigns for Huddersfield Town, that much is obvious.

The abysmal start under Jan Siewert has been addressed by Danny Cowley since his September arrival but he will know there is considerably more work to be done.

The ambition is, obviously, to make sure Town avoid the drop in the final nine games of the season when the Championship resumes on June 20.

One thing that needs to be addressed over the summer is Town’s weakness at set-pieces.

According to whoscored.com Town are bottom of the table when it comes to shipping goals from set-pieces in the Championship - 19 of them to be precise.

Also on 19 are Wigan Athletic while Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers have conceded 17 and Cardiff City 15.

Blackburn Rovers are the best side at dealing with set-pieces having been breached six times, followed by

Swansea with seven. It’s no better at the other end with Huddersfield bottom of the pile when it comes to making set-pieces count, netting just seven times this season.

Just ahead of Cowley’s side are Fulham, Barnsley and

Leeds United when it comes to scoring from set-pieces.

For some sides it is the speed that they can move through the thirds in transition that can make up for struggles elsewhere, but Town are also bottom of the league when it comes to goals netted on the break, with none at all scored in this league campaign.

Leading the way in the list for counter-attacking goals scored are Leeds United and Hull City, both on six.

For Cowley, who used set-pieces to his advantage during his time as manager at Lincoln City, particularly with the focal point of big target man Matt Rhead up front, he will no doubt be looking to improve their fortunes at either end with more dominance in the box.
