ONE of Huddersfield Town’s relegation rivals have been dealt a major blow after their leading scorer expressed a desire not to turn out for the club when the season restarts.

Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor, who has netted 11 times this season, has spoken about his decision to not return to play in the Championship’s imminent restart.

The campaign is due to resume on June 20 but Taylor, who sees his contract expire at the end of the month, has decided not to pen a short-term extension.

Taylor fears his career will be affected if he was to be injured in the remaining nine matches of the season, having already missed a large chunk of the season with a knee problem sustained in September.

“I’ve sat in my living room staring at a blank TV screen for hours on end these last few weeks. I’ve not eaten or slept properly. I’ve been up ‘til 5am listening to the birds chirping thinking about it,” he said.

“Then I finally came to the decision together with the manager. This is a time nobody has had to deal with before lockdown has been difficult for everyone.

“I’m gutted, but I don’t expect people to care and I don’t really expect any sympathy.

“My reasons and concerns stem from my knee injury - it plays on the mind.

“It makes me think what would happen if I had an injury now that threatened the rest of my career. I’ll be honest with you, it scared the life out of me.”
