ROYALS’ CALL TO YOUTH CHARITY

-

given the honour of talking to the future king and his wife.

Cain Adams, 16, from Birkby and Summer Hall, 14 from Ashbrow, were included in the call, where they discussed how they got involved and what they do to help others.

Cain told the royal couple he taught the younger children how to play chess.

“Are you a chess maestro?” William asked him.

The Duchess said he’d “have to give her some lessons”.

Summer told the Cambridges that volunteering had been great and had given her so many opportunities.

The Duke of Cambridge revealed he has been secretly working as a volunteer supporting people who contacted a crisis helpline developed by his Royal Foundation.

William’s work with Shout 85258 - a round-the-clock text messaging helpline - was announced to mark

Volunteers Week, last week.

Kate has also been helping others and has taken part in “check in and chat” calls with those self-isolating or vulnerable as part of the Royal Voluntary Service’s NHS Volunteer Responders scheme.

Sophie said they had both been very interested in youth provision.

She said: “William and Kate loved the fact that we have a lot of people from all different backgrounds and the fact they come back and volunteer to help the younger ones.

“We discussed what the kids are doing during the Covid crisis and how volunteering hasn’t stopped.”

She added: “As a very small organisation it was nice to get the recognition for the work that we are doing. We get a lot of success with young people but it’s also great to speak to to royalty - our future king!

“They were very interested and they said they’d come up and visit at some point to see it in action.”
