A GROUP of plucky neighbours allegedly bundled a hit-and-run driver into the boot of a car and shopped him into police after he recklessly ploughed into vehicles in a Huddersfield street.

Fearless residents in Wellington Street, Lindley, chased after a man who crashed his car into multiple vehicles in the street late on Saturday night.

When they finally reached him, they are said to have put him in the boot and returned him to the street where he was arrested by police.

Peter, who watched events unfold, said his neighbours were given a heroes’ welcome with many residents staying out in the street to give them a round of applause at 1am.

Recalling the crash, the 43-yearold, who heard a loud “thud”, said: “I was upstairs and all of a sudden I heard a bang and I thought ‘please God no - not my car again.’

“I ran downstairs and opened the front door to a scene of destruction and devastation.”

Peter said the driver had ploughed into a series of cars before “legging it” from the scene.

Some neighbours gave chase but after they could not keep up, they decided to drive round in a bid to find him.

When they did, they decided to take action to ensure police got their man.

Peter said: “They drove round to try and find him and when they did they bundled him into the car by putting him in the boot and by the time they got back to the street police were here.

“They pulled up behind the police car and they said ‘we’ve got him.’ Then police went round and pulled him out of the boot.

“He was in the back of the police car accusing them of kidnapping him and there was a round of applause for the people who’d caught him.”

West Yorkshire Police said they were called out to Wellington Street on Saturday, June 20, shortly before midnight.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “We got a call that a car had crashed into parked cars. It was a damage only collision.

“A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst being over the prescribed limit and taking a motor vehicle without consent.

“He has since been bailed pending further enquiries.”
