‘No BLM protests planned’

-

THERE will be no protest organised by the Black Lives Matter Huddersfield group in the near future, a spokesperson has confirmed.

Amid news that two protests were happening earlier this month - one of which did not go ahead - the Black Lives Matter Huddersfield group moved to distance itself from the quickly-arranged gatherings.

On June 5 it said it was still in discussions over when and where to protest following the killing of George Floyd by a police officer in the USA, which has sparked social unrest across the world.

A date of July 5 for a peaceful protest was eventually proposed.

But a spokesperson for the Black Lives Mattter Huddersfield group has now said they won’t be holding a protest anytime soon, saying it was “postponed indefinitely”. They said they needed longer to plan it and build the appropriate team.

They told the Examiner: “We’re considering doing one at some point but even if we don’t we’re still doing a lot of other things.

“People are, and always have been, doing work for Black Lives Matter.

“We’re speaking with the national group and our aim is to keep the campaign going rather than it just being a moment.

“But we have no idea when a protest would be, we’re not going to rush into anything.

“If people want to get involved they can have a look at our page, read some books, speak to their MP about what they can do - it’s not just about protesting on the streets.”

A previous Black Lives Matter protest in Huddersfield, on June 13, attracted about 1,500 people and was praised for being “full of peace and respect” with the vast majority of people wearing face masks and attempting to observe social distancing advice.
