Danny: I wanted to finish season with the Terriers

SIMPSON SAYS HE HAD VERBAL AGREEMENT TO STAY WITH TOWN

-

Liverpool loanee Kamil Grabara are the only members of the playing squad whose deal has not been extended through to the end of the campaign on July 22.

Simpson, who now won’t be available for tomorrow’s game at Nottingham Forest, says the club withdrew their offer of a contract until the end of the season less than two hours before last Saturday’s defeat to Wigan.

He tweeted: “Unfortunately finishing the season the way I planned wasn’t meant to be, so I feel it’s only fair that I am honest and I explain to the fans that treated me so well.

“Last week me and the club had verbally agreed a one-month extension which the club withdrew one hour and a half before kick-off against Wigan.

“I am saddened by the outcome and the way the situation was handled. It was very unprofessional.

“I believed I would have been there until the end of the season to finish what we started to try and help the boys stay in the Championship. To leave the club in this manner is disappointing, but I believe the boys and the manager will fight and achieve the aim of staying in the Championship next season.”

The Examiner approached the club for comment but they declined to do so.

Manager Danny Cowley has said both he and Simpson were keen for the player to stay at the club until the end of the season but hinted that financial pressures led to his impending exit.

The Town boss said: “We have to make some financial decisions in this time and we all understand it’s not easy for football clubs at this moment.

“I feel sorry for all clubs, we’re incurring all the additional costs of trying to play these games while trying to get through them.

“It’s not been easy and we’ve had to cut our cloth accordingly.

“With regards to Danny, Danny did great for us. He came in off the back of the West Brom game [in September] and literally had only trained 10 days with us before his first game and then we went on a seven-game unbeaten

run.

“He had a great effect not just on the pitch but also off the pitch. He’s ever so popular with the boys. I know he was desperate to be able to finish the season with us and we were desperate for him to.

“Up until very close to matchday on Saturday we thought he was going to, but unfortunately that wasn’t possible for reasons that probably someone else is probably better to answer.

“We have to accept that and understand that, and while it’s disappointing for us and for the club and also for Danny, we have to move forward. That’s what you always have to do in life and in foot
