for environment, said: “We know that the news that these spaces are opening will be welcomed, children especially will be excited to use the play areas.

“However, it remains incredibly important that you take time to judge the risk to your family before you decide to enter a space.

“The virus remains part of our lives, but if we continue to be aware and follow public health advice we can start to enjoy more things in this new normal.”

At playgrounds that are opened, children will once again be able to play on swings, slides and climbing frames, but some equipment such as tunnels will remain closed.

Council officials have urged children and adults to continue to stay two metres apart from people outside their bubble wherever possible, avoid touching their face and not share playground equipment.

They are also being asked not to eat or drink in play areas and to stay away if they or anyone in their household feels unwell.

A spokesperson added: “As it isn’t possible for the council to keep all 340 play areas and outdoor gyms sanitised, visitors are being advised to bring their own wipes to clean the equipment alongside their hand sanitiser. Any used wipes should be placed in the bins provided or taken home if they are full.”

Today’s rules change will also see local sports clubs alerted that grounds will be available for practice. Council teams will begin the process of mowing pitches for practice over the coming weeks.

All bowling greens, croquet lawns and petanque courts will be open to use, but toilets and clubhouses remain closed – so hand sanitising and washing is still encouraged.
