Wednesday at Hillsborough tonight in a crucial game at the bottom end of the Championship table, with Wednesday one of two teams currently part of an EFL investigation.
They are undergoing an investigation for breaching the EFL’s profit and sustainability laws, while Wigan were handed a 12-point deduction after entering administration, which the club have now appealed.
With both clubs still having cases undecided with only nine days of the season remaining, the potential for the relegation zone to be shaken up based on off-the-pitch issues is very likely.
“I believe that football should be decided on the pitch, on the paint between the grass, not in a boardroom or in a courtroom,” Cowley explained.
“The EFL, I think it has been hard for them, I genuinely do.
“I think we are in unprecedented times.
“Do I think the British government have handled this well? No.
“Do I think the EFL have handled this situation well? No, and there is a lot of learning for them moving forward.
“I don’t want to be saved by the misfortune of another club that has to go into administration or has to get deducted points from FFP.”
