Boss comes to defence of Town after battling show

DANNY Cowley heaped praise on his Town defence in the goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

The point earned from the Hillsborough stalemate enabled Town to move three points clear of the Championship relegation zone with two matches to play – and they have a better goal difference than both Hull City and Luton who play each other on Saturday.

Former Sheffield United defender Richard Stearman – recalled to the starting line-up on the opposite side of the Steel City – led the defensive effort, while Jonas Lossl made a number of smart stops.

Town went close at the other end through Emile Smith Rowe, Steve Mounie, Karlan Grant and substitute Fraizer Campbell, but while the stats show they failed to net for a fourth successive match since bagging three at Birmingham, Cowley was delighted with a clean sheet after the home disappointment against Luton.

“I thought all the back four were excellent,” said Cowley, who again played Trevoh Chalobah at right-back.

“Jonas made some really good saves but all from distance.

“I don’t think they had any shots in our box. The chances they did have were from outside the box and from individual brilliance, so at no point did they cut us open.

“Our defensive structure was good.

“I thought it was a really committed performance,” added the boss.

“If we took one of those chances we are probably talking about a perfect away performance. But we have lacked that clinical edge in the final third.”

SOMETIMES it’s all a matter of timing.

Had this match come at any other time of the season – even as recently as two games ago – we would be shrugging this game and point off as a decent and hard-earned point in an energetic Yorkshire derby played between two sides desperate to win.

Unfortunately, Huddersfield Town do not have time to simply enjoy the positives for what they are.

They need as many points as possible as quickly as possible, and
