Hotel is blasted as ‘dirty and smelly’

A HUDDERSFIELD hotel which was branded one of the town’s worst last year has come under fire again after a woman from London described it as dirty and smelly.
Karen Morgan, 63, formerly of Huddersfield, said she booked into The Ashfield Hotel on New North Road last month and arranged to stay four nights with her disabled sister, Naz, 56.
But Karen, who was in town to lay flowers on a relative’s grave said she ended up £250 out of pocket after she quickly realised the place was not for her and ended up staying at a friend’s home in Holmfirth.
She said: “It was absolutely disgusting. I walked in and walked out. The place is horrendous - it’s dirty, it stinks, and we felt very unsafe. The fire door was left open.
“I had my disabled sister with me and we had just driven all the way from London.
“We had booked a twin room for four nights. She needed to use the loo but we could not get in.
“I just couldn’t wait to get out of there - we didn’t stay long - there was no way I could stay there.
“I should have read the reviews beforehand. I’ve asked for my money back but the management have refused.
“I asked to speak to the boss but they said they had no phone number for him, which I found very strange.”
Last year YorkshireLive reported that the budget hotel was undergoing a renovation after concerns were raised by council inspectors and disgusted customers.
Guests complained about stained surfaces, peeling wallpaper, damp smells, broken fixtures and filthy rooms.
However, the management insisted they were spending thousands of pounds on improvements including fire safety, and the installation of emergency lights and door seals.
Kirklees Council and West Yorkshire Fire Service have both expressed concerns about the hotel in the past.
The Examiner has approached The Ashfield Hotel for comment but they have not returned our calls.
