Willock took a pay cut to join Terriers

HUDDERSFIELD Town boss Danny Cowley has revealed Chris Willock took a big hit in the pocket to take this Championship chance.

The 22-year-old Benfica winger spent the first half of the campaign with tonight’s opponents West Brom, without getting a minute on the pitch.

He returned to his parent club in January and was snapped up just before the deadline by Cowley, who has handed him 13 appearances so far.

The Town boss explained, however, that his pay cheques have been significantly less at the John Smith’s Stadium - a choice the player was happy to make.

“Chris is a young player who had his education at Arsenal and then went to Benfica,” explained Cowley.

“He had a really good experience there and came back to this country. At West Brom, as a young player, it was his first real experience of senior football in this country.

“He didn’t play as much as he would have liked to at West Brom, there is no doubt about that, and he then arrived with us.

“He took nearly a 60 per cent wage cut to make the loan possible, which is an incredible thing for him to do as a young player - it shows you how hungry he is to be successful.

“We are incredibly proud of him for doing that and showing a willingness to do that, because he wanted to prove he could play at this level.

“We know he is capable of that, he has got real, real talent. We are trying to help him with his game to get a level of consistency, which all young players need help with.”

BOSS Danny Cowley says Huddersfield Town are in better shape to face West Brom tonight than they were Luton - with one vital injury worry cleared up.

The Terriers are bidding to topple a side placed second in the table and hoping to return to the Premier League, and they will need to be at their best to do so.
