THE long-awaited return of Kirklees Council fitness facilities is almost over.

Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) is opening the fitness facilities at four of its 11 sites at 6.30 am on Monday.

The two major leisure centres in Huddersfield – Stadium Sports Centre and Huddersfield Leisure Centre – are reopening, along with Dewsbury Sports Centre and Batley Sports and Tennis Centre.

Visitors will be able to pump iron, use the machines and attend classes.

KAL officials have put in new measures to reduce capacity and help maintain social distancing.

And fitness fans are being warned about one major change for those attending the gyms. There will be nowhere to get changed.

People attending the fitness centres must come already wearing their workout clothing and preferably without a bag.

Toilets will be open.

Other big changes brought in to prevent the spread of Covid-19 include:

Customers are banned from bringing their own sweat towels. Paper towels are being provided by KAL.

Customers must clean equipment before and after they use it.

Attendance at the gym must be prebooked online in half-hour slots. If you miss your slot you cannot enter and you are not allowed in early.

KAL said it was not putting a limit on how long customers could work out.

Monday’s relaunch marks phase one of a three phases of reopening.

Phase 2 begins on August 10, which will see swimming pools reopen at Batley Sports & Tennis Centre, Dewsbury Sports Centre, Huddersfield Leisure Centre and Stadium Health & Fitness Club.

A week later, phase 3 will bring the return of gyms and classes at Colne Valley Leisure Centre, Lockwood Park Health & Fitness Club and Scissett Baths & Fitness Centre.

KAL have provided full details around this, alongside further practical customer information on their website.

There are currently no plans to reopen Batley Baths & Recreation Centre, Deighton Sports Arena, Holmfirth Pool & Fitness Centre or the Leeds Road Sports Complex.

The Spenborough Fitness Centre and Pool has been demolished and a new facility is currently being constructed.

None of KAL’s family attractions such as Dare 2 Air or the splash park are due to reopen.

Its Bradley Park golf course and driving range has reopened.
