Leeds manager in praise of Corberan

ASK Marcelo Bielsa and he would tell you his understudy is ready. Carlos Corberan is no longer the student, no longer the man working in the background, waiting for his moment. He was, on Thursday, confirmed as Huddersfield’s new manager.

It is a big step for the 37-year-old, who has spent the past two years working as Leeds’ Under-23s head coach. The Spaniard has, though, had an enviable education and is not as inexperienced as his age may suggest.

Corberan began coaching at the age of 26, having retired early as a player. His passion was in tutoring, in tactics and ideas. He has since worked in several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Spain and Cyprus, all the while honing his craft.

And Bielsa is clearly confident in his ability to take on the manager’s role at Huddersfield.

“Each of them made a bigger contribution than me for the team to grow,” Bielsa said of his backroom staff after Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League was confirmed. “Please believe this, it is true.

“There is an example about the evaluation I’m making about my colleagues that confirms what I’m

■■THE 2020/21 EFL campaign will start on the weekend of September 12, the governing body has confirmed.

The news comes just an hour after the saying is not exaggerated. Carlos Corberan has been chosen by one Championship team to be the manager of the first team and it is a team that one year ago was in the Premier League. This proves what I am saying is true.”

What, then, will Corberan’s imminent appointment mean for Huddersfield ahead of the new Championship season?

Inevitably, Corberan’s approach is similar to that of Bielsa’s. While in charge of Leeds Under-23s, he was tasked with establishing some tactical consistency so that young players breaking through into the first team were accustomed to the style of football.

Huddersfield fans can expect attractive, expansive football, and plenty more goals.

Premier League confirmed its 2020/21 campaign will start on the same day.

Two dates had long been identified as potential start dates Saturday, August 29 or

Saturday, September 12.

However, the September start date was always thought to be the one favoured by most clubs as it gives them more time to prepare for next season.
