Couple’s ‘vile attitude’ reduces barmaid to tears

A RUDE couple dining at a Yorkshire pub left a barmaid in floods of tears after making a sarcastic remark about their waiting time.

Another woman, who was paying her bill at The Woolpack Country Inn at Whitley, Dewsbury, on Tuesday night said she suddenly became aware of an unpleasant incident unfolding.

The pub was packed with people taking advantage of the 50 per cent ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ offer.

Writing on a local Facebook group the witness said: “Just in case the couple in the silver 66 plate Mercedes estate who were in the Woolpack at Whitley yesterday evening at about 7pm are reading this I just want to make you aware of the consequences of your actions.

“While it was blatantly obvious that the staff at the pub, three young girls, and the management had been taken by surprise by the amount of people wishing to dine on what is normally a quiet Tuesday evening, and while we agree that mistakes were made by the three young kids trying to run the place, you had to say something to them as you left.

“Adding to that, as you walked past the crowd, (against the one way system), you felt it necessary to exclaim to people waiting to be seated: ‘I hope you’ve plenty of patience.’

“What you didn’t see was the ramifications of your foul, vile, self-entitled and impatient attitude.

“Before you got into your car one of the girls broke down uncontrollably and was in floods of tears.

“The entire pub suddenly realised these kids’ plight and the stress that they were under.

“Under the present Covid rules these poor people, who are not on huge wages, are doing their very best under very difficult circumstances to provide a service.

“To leave them in floods of tears is utterly disgusting and I hope you are ashamed of yourself.

“You will know who you are if you are reading this and we suggest you return to the pub with some kind of generous gift, an apology and above all a friendly smile, and we hope you appreciate that in future this could be one of your loved ones.

“We tried to get to speak to them in the car park but by the time we had paid our bill, made sure the girl was okay and got to the car park they were just driving away.”

Dan Lee, manager at the pub, said staff had been taken aback by the impact of the government’s 50pc offering on meals and that the pub had been busy.

He said: “The girl was under pressure, that’s the industry we are in. Fortunately, everyone in the restaurant could see the situation.

“I have spoken to her and she is fine with it.”
