Frustrated by restrictions

- By VICTORIA SCHEER editorial@examiner.co.uk @examiner

THE Government’s announcement that restrictions will continue in Bradford, Kirklees and Calderdale has been met with dismay by many.

Residents in these areas, as well as in parts of Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and Leicester, have not been allowed to meet people from other households indoors for the past fortnight and will not be able to do so for at least another week.

Many have criticised the decision and have called for the Government to geographically localise rather than just following the council authority boundaries.

One of our readers, Helen wrote: “Absolutely furious is not the word. My mum is meant to be visiting me next Saturday from Wiltshire we have a restriction booked for Sunday and Monday we have 4 nights in Northumberland booked in a hotel.

“Now we don’t know if we are coming or going. Shes not been out for five months as she’s 86 hence her coming here as opposed to me going there. It’s absolutely ridiculous we’re Calder Valley not Halifax and to be honest we need dividing back up.”

Echoing her sentiments, Joanne wrote: “I’ve not seen my son in months as he now lives in Lancashire.

We’re back on these rules in Hd8 and we’re nowhere near Huddersfield or Bradford.

“We live out in the sticks and we’re classed as Kirklees.”

Others have voiced concern that the measures imposed will not curb the spread of the virus.

Mick wrote: “Wow, really going to have a massive impact on the people causing this, who never gave a monkey’s in full lockdown and still don’t in this ‘lockdown.’ Punishing the people following the rules due to the actions of people who really will never, ever care about the rules or anyone but themselves is a top idea BoJo. Going to have no effect whatsoever till the massively overworked police issue spot fines properly, which they can’t because they’re too busy chasing muggers and robbers who are now allowed to wear face masks legally.”

Also not convinced the measures will help, Lizzy wrote: “Will people please take some ownership of this problem, don’t do the blame game. Please someone explain to me how we get to the heady situation (like Wales) of a 4 family social bubble. To my mind that is keep to socially distant and strict hygiene rules.

“Until we are all complying with rules, regulations and the law we will not reduce the infection rate. The alternative is back into ‘lockdown’ until the vaccine is developed.”

One angry reader said she was due to lay her husband to rest but fears she won’t ever be able to.

“I have absolutely no respect left for this government, I understand that I like many others couldn’t have a proper funeral for my husband, so I planned later on to have a get together with a few friends and family in my garden, but now this won’t be happening,” wrote Carolyn.

“I was only planning a few people, I am so angry, it looks like I will never be able to celebrate his life.”

The government’s decision to continue to impose these measures was based on data showing that infection rates have not gone down.

From August 15 theatres, casinos and bowling alleys will be allowed to reopen elsewhere in the country but not areas currently facing extra restrictions.

Additional measures will also continue in Bradford, where pools, indoor gyms and other leisure facilities as well as nail bars, spas and beauty salons are not allowed to open.
