Warning to Corberan don’t panic!

WARNOCK PROVED FIRST GAME DEFEAT WON’T BE END OF THE WORLD

-

The 37-year-old Spaniard is already preparing in preseason training at the Canalside complex, where the opening sessions were taken by his assistants, Jorge Alarcon and Narcis Pelach, along with Danny Schofield - who worked alongside the new boss in the Leeds United Academy.

Corberan has been brought in to spearhead a new approach from Town, with an attacking style from a 4-3-3 framework and an intention to promote from within the playing squad when at all possible.

It’s a new era for the club, and Town fans around the globe will hope it goes well for everyone concerned.

But they shouldn’t get too downhearted if the result on day one isn’t exactly what the doctor ordered.

Wind the clock back 27 years for an illustration of what we mean.

August 14, 1993, marked Neil Warnock’s first match in charge of the Terriers, having been appointed to succeed Ian Ross at what was then the Leeds Road ground.

Warnock’s team had to take on Reading in a home match which attracted 6,415 fans.

His team was: Steve Francis (on debut), Simon Trevitt, Chris Billy, Jonathan Dyson, Graham Mitchell, Peter Jackson,

Gary Barnett, Chris Marsden, Iwan Roberts, Iffy Onuora and Phil Starbuck.

The bench featured goalkeeper Tim Clarke, Iain Dunn and Andy Booth.

Not a bad line-up at all, but Town were 2-0 down by halftime and eventually lost 3-0 as Jimmy Quinn added to firsthalf goals from Mick Gooding and Stuart Lovell.

Reading, of course, went on to be champions of what was then Division Two (third tier), while Town rallied to eventually finish 11th, after making mid-season signings like Darren Bullock and Ronnie Jepson.

Warnock took Town to Wembley that season in the Autoglass Trophy final and followed up a year later, with the basis of the same squad, by winning promotion in the play-off final.
