DEAR BBC, today I received your letter asking me as a 75-year-old, to start paying £157.50 for my colour TV licence (even if I am blind or have a black and white TV “you could not make it up”). One little problem at this point none of the communication was in braille!

Being on the basic state pension, I am on a very tight budget, therefore I worked out that £157.50 is equivalent to our total shopping bill for about five weeks, therefore if we gave up buying bread (approx £1) and we gave up buying our four pints of milk (approx £1) and cut out one luxury butter (approx £1.50) all week, every week, we could afford to pay our TV licence weekly.

The only problem with this is I will have to go into more than one shop during the pandemic. If for one reason or another I miss a payment, could you give me good warning as to the court hearing because I will have to arrange some sort of transport to get me there.

Please give my regards to Gary Lineker – £1,750,000 pa; Graham Norton – £610,000 pa;

Huw Edwards – £490,000 pa; Steve pa; Alan Shearer – £440,000 pa; Andrew Marr – £390,000 pa; Claudia Winkleman – £370,000 pa; Zoe Ball – £370,000 pa and Vanessa Feltz – £355,000 pa.

Story brought back brother’s challenge

MAY I say the best of luck to Brooke Inglesfield on her Tower to Tower challenge to raise funds for Emma’s charity (Examiner, August 13). She is a star and I will definitely be making a donation.

Your feature prompted me to tell you about my brother, Douglas Parkin, who, at the age of 71 also did a Tower to Tower fund raiser, but in his case it was an actual cycle ride from the Eiffel Tower to Blackpool Tower to raise funds for a cancer charity following the death of his wife, Jean.

He was joined on this venture by another man who had also lost his wife to cancer plus a professional cycling team.

DOUGLAS was born in Huddersfield, trained at Huddersfield Technical College to become a master butcher and played a lot of rugby in the town. He now lives in Tarleton, near

Southport, where he had his own butcher’s shop until he retired, although he still does a couple of days a week making specialist sausages for a firm in Southport.

Last year, at the age of 75 and with a knee replacement, he played rugby for the Bahtats Masters Rugby Club in Australia and New Zealand.

Scotland is welcome to keep our PM

SO the Prime Minister is taking his family to Scotland for a summer break?

I think it is fair to say not all of Scotland will be thrilled about this given the loathing many Scots have for Johnson.

It will clearly though, be beneficial for the Prime Minister and his family, and even more so for the country, for Johnson to be able to spend a lot more time with his son – it’s just a crying shame this can’t be made a permanent arrangement.
