Head’s joy and relief for pupils

A HEADTEACHER has praised students who achieved GCSE results higher than their target grades.

Dave Wadsworth, principal of Shelley College in Huddersfield, said it was a relief to see so many smiles on the faces of pupils as they picked up results yesterday.

Students at Shelley, as elsewhere, were awarded their grades by their schools after exams were cancelled and teaching disrupted because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Wadsworth said yesterday: “Following what can only be described as a challenging and anxious time over the last few months, it was amazing to see so many smiles from our Year 11 students this morning.

“Due to the ever changing government guidance it was clear that many students were worried about receiving their grades, however the relief was clear to see once they opened their results and saw how well they had performed.

“GCSE results days should always be a time for celebration and today should be no different. Students have worked hard over the last three years and thoroughly deserve their amazing results.

“We say to our students that there will be tears on GCSE results day, but let’s make sure they are tears of joy. “That has certainly been the case!” Mr Wadsworth said he was ‘extremely proud to report that 32 students achieved on average two grades above their target grades across all their GCSE subjects.’

And he singled out a number of students for special praise.

He said: “I am so proud to share that Emily Jenkinson and Arran Mitchell both achieved grade 9s in all nine of their GCSE subjects. This is truly remarkable and places them in an elite group throughout the country.”
