HUDDERSFIELD Town’s scheduled friendly away to Southport on Saturday afternoon has been cancelled after ‘a small number of positive tests’ were returned in the latest round of coronavirus testing.

A club statement said: “Huddersfield Town’s friendly against Southport has been postponed following the club’s latest Covid-19 test results.

“The club can confirm there have been a small number of positive tests for Covid-19 following the latest round of testing at Canalside.

“The individuals will not be named due to medical confidentiality.

“Those affected will now self-isolate, in line with protocol. The safety of players and staff is absolutely paramount, and after consulting with the EFL, the clubs have come to the decision to cancel the pre-season friendly.

“We will continue to strictly adhere to the EFL’s Covid-19 protocols, ensuring that Canalside remains a safe environment for the players and staff.”

It is currently unclear precisely what that will mean for forthcoming fixtures but as it stands there is no suggestion that any matches beyond the Southport friendly will be affected. Town are currently scheduled to face Fleetwood Town and

Bradford City in pre-season friendlies next Wednesday 26th August, while their Carabao Cup game against Rochdale is set for Saturday 5th September.

The Championship season will then begin the following weekend, with Town set to face Norwich at the John Smith’s Stadium in their opening game.

The club will continue to act on medical advice regarding upcoming games.
