CARLOS Corberan has explained why Huddersfield Town have extended the contract of talented midfielder Matty Daly.

The 19-year-old has just put pen to paper on a three-year deal making him a John Smith’s Stadium player until 2023, with the club having the option to add another year.

It’s a clear statement Corberan feels he can be part of Town’s Championship squad and play a key role at an important rebuilding stage for the club.

“I appreciate the work the academy has done with Matty Daly because they recruited him some years ago and now he is nearing the path into the first team,” said Corberan, who was denied the chance to play the teenager at Southport in a friendly on Saturday because of the Covid-19 postponement.

“He has moved close to the first team and the fact we extend the contract now is very good news for the club, because our target is to bring young players through.

“We’ve analysed him and I think he’s a very interesting player and I want him to keep the desire he has right now to be self-demanding and to keep growing.

“The most important thing for young players is to have their mind ready to keep working and never think they have everything they need.

“If Matty continues with the desire he is showing now and the mindset, he can make a career here.”

CARLOS Corberan knows why teams would be interested in signing Karlan Grant during this transfer window.

Town turned down £15m for their leading scorer in January and following his tally of 19 goals in the Championship season - there’s talk of further interest, especially from newly-promoted Premier League side West Brom.

Former Baggies striker Kevin Phillips has gone on record as saying the 22-year-old would be a sensible capture for the club.

He was impressed with how Grant stepped up from his £2m move from Charlton Athletic to score four goals in the Premier League, before playing a leading part in Town’s survival bid last term.

“I’ve said all along that the striker area is the area where Slaven Bilic will be putting all his eggs in the basket,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“Grant has struggled at times at Huddersfield but he does have that bit of Premier League experience.

“It’s important to bring in someone who has that experience and

has scored some goals in the Premier League.

“Towards the end of last season he started producing the goods and I watched him in a couple of live games - he’s got good movement. The big thing for me with West Brom is: can they create enough chances for the striker to score goals?

“Whichever striker comes in, if the team isn’t creating opportunities, can you create them yourself?

“It’s a big ask but if you can get Grant at the right money, then he wouldn’t be a bad signing. But I’m sure there are other players on Slaven’s list as well.”

Grant has been training with Corberan’s squad at Canalside and is ready to feature in the coach’s 4-3-3 formation.

The new Terriers boss has noted the player’s high impact off the left wing, so how confident is he that he can keep the player beyond this
