New bar gets go-ahead

COUNCIL GAVE GREEN LIGHT DESPITE LOCAL CONCERNS ABOUT NOISE

CONCERNS about noise have not stopped Kirklees Council from giving the green light to a new bar.

A bid to allow a new drinking venue in a former Holmfirth dental surgery has been approved by planning officials.

The establishment, believed to be called Chapel Bar, is planned for Stable Court, a side road off Huddersfield Road beside the Riverside Shopping Centre.

Council officials received a number of objections from local firms worried about noise and anti-social behaviour.

One said: “The entrance to 7 Stable Court is hidden from the road and could encourage antisocial behaviour and littering.”

“I cannot think of a worse location for a bar,” said another.

“I do not want the noise and issues of a bar, where I can guarantee that the outside space in front of the bar will be filled with people.”

“I’m really concerned about there being a rowdy atmosphere...” said a third opponent of the plan. “There’s enough bars in Holmfirth already, we don’t need another one,” they added.

Another said “people congregating” around the venue would make them feel vulnerable.

But official consultees raised no major concerns.

Holme Valley Parish Council said it would support the change of use as long as there was “appropriate noise insulation” to protect the podiatry clinic above.

The bar must now gain a premises licence. The applicants have suggested they will only open Friday to Sunday from noon to 11pm.
