Clean slate gives everyone chance to impress Carlos

-

THE end of the season and the start of the season seem to be one. They are blending into each other and, to be honest, fans, players and managers haven’t had time to breathe since the last ball was kicked.

It’s particularly weird looking at the transfer market at the moment.

Very little has been done. You make signings when you have stability, you invest money you may not be getting a return on when you feel your club can handle the financial responsibilities and everything stays secure.

There is hardly a club out there that can honestly say they are working under those conditions at the moment.

Huddersfield Town’s friendly against Bradford was a decent enough start for them, but the highlight is probably the fact that when a new head coach turns up, everybody starts with a clean slate, and the Academy kids are desperate to impress our new man, Carlos Corberan.

We have seen it with Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds who would much rather have a young Academy player running himself into the ground than an old pro who can’t be persuaded to change his spots.

We are only a couple of weeks away from the first league game and it’s going to feel weird that we can’t turn up.

Crowds returning could be just around the corner, however. Doncaster Racecourse, for the St Leger meeting, will be allowing spectators back in. Not the full crowd, but at least it will be a start.

Just as we had to watch the friendly on Youtube, we will be watching the opening matches of the season on iFollow, through the Huddersfield Town website.

It’s been slow going for Town in the transfer market so far, but as I’ve said that’s the same everywhere. It shouldn’t be a surprise and things will develop over the next few weeks.

One thing I have found throughout football, though, and at any level, is that if fans are presented with a first-team full of young players who are dying for the shirt and who are desperate to succeed, then they will get behind them like never before.

We have yet to see what the first team will look like this season but however it shapes up, we have to stay positive, stick with the new head coach, get behind all the young players and see where Town are come Christmas.

It’s remarkable to think last season only finished last weekend, but I really enjoyed the Champions League final.

Bayern Munich were worthy winners although, as with all games, the first goal and chances missed will always haunt the players involved. Neymar, once again, winning nothing and not performing at the very top level. How he has ever been put on the same page as Messi and Ronaldo I have no idea. Those two have consistently performed, carried their teams and always given value for money. I’m afraid you can’t really say that about the Brazilian.

The star of the show, for me, was Thiago. What a player. His touch, his balance, his awareness, his passing (short and long) and his vision were all just fantastic.

Talk about the complete performance! If Liverpool do sign him, as seems very likely as he is leaving Bayern this summer, then City, United and the rest can forget about the Premier League title next season.

Apart from Thiago, the other thing which stood out was how many players Bayern got into the box when they were attacking.

When they scored, there were six players ahead of the man who crossed the ball.

We will hopefully see Town doing more of that this season!
