When ‘Parishians’ can hold court over a pint

LOYAL customers of The Parish raised an astonishing £45,000 to try to keep it afloat during the coronavirus crisis.

Now almost six months after it last served a pint or a burger, managers have finally unveiled when it will reopen at its new home.

They have pencilled in Friday, September 11, as the grand relaunch at their new premises on Queen Street.

Pub bosses revealed in July that they were moving from Kirkgate, thought to be the oldest pub in Huddersfield, to the Old Courthouse, formerly the home of controversial nightclub Tokyo’s.

The relocation was forced by a dispute with pubco giant EI, formerly Enterprise Inns.

EI was widely criticised across the country for demanding tenants pay their full rent despite being forced to close due to the pandemic. Many, including The Parish, were ineligible for government support.

After pressure from MPs, EI offered a three-month rent credit.

The reasons for The Parish’s dispute with EI have not been revealed.

In an update for “Parishians”, managers confirmed they were making good progress with the move.

The message said: “Our new site The Old Courthouse is bigger, sexier and will allow us to develop The Parish into something we reckon will be really special for Huddersfield.

“We will be able to get bigger bands, feed more people, and once we are all allowed to touch each other again we will be able to have the best parties this town has ever seen! We can’t wait to see you all again and to that end, how about a date. The 11th of September is down in our diary, it only has a little question mark after it.

“So, all being well, and all going according to plan, that is the date we are looking to open.” They added: “Due to this pesky virus we will only be allowing people to come along if a table is free.

“We will be running table service, we are keeping groups to a maximum of six and will be asking every group to sign in on arrival. It will be first

come first served for the first week and then once food is up and running (hopefully the week after) we will be taking bookings.

“Keep your eyes on our socials for further updates re bookings, parish cards, gigs, events, food, sexy pics of the new spot being developed and decorated.

“Finally for this little message, THANK YOU for being so patient with us, we cant wait to get back to being The Parish with everyone.

“We can’t wait to drink, sing, dance, shenanigan, laugh, eat and party with you again.

“It won’t be quite the same to start with but we will get there in the end, and when we do get there, its gonna be frikkin amazing!”
