Carlos coy over Gotts and Pipa

HUDDERSFIELD Town boss Carlos Corberan remains coy over speculation linking the club to transfer window moved for Robbie Gotts and Pipa.

The Terriers boss, who arrived at the club in July, knows both players well.

He was with midfielder Gotts at Leeds United when Corberan bossed the club’s under-23s.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a loan move away from the newly-promoted Premier League side and Town’s proximity, coupled with the pair previously working together, means it is an obvious link.

The other player heavily linked with Town is Spanish defender Pipa.

The 22-year right-back is at Espanyol but reports suggest he was undergoing a medical at

Town yesterday. Corberan acknowledged the speculation but refused to divulge whether a deal for either was close.

“I want to have a lot of respect, I don’t want to be disrespectful to another club,” he said.

“I know both players but I don’t want to talk with players that are part of other clubs.

“I have to be focused about the players we have right now.

“Of course, if we have any movement in the market I will be very open to talk with you about the skills these players have.”

■■GARETH Southgate plans to bring Harry Maguire back into the England set-up next month having withdrawn the defender from his squad following his Greek court case.

The defender will not be involved in England’s upcoming Nations League double-header against Iceland and Denmark, with the manager withdrawing him from the squad.

Asked if he has been in contact with Maguire and whether he would come back into the thinking in October, Southgate said: “Yes and yes.

“We’ve been in touch right the way through the last two and a half Joel Pereira on loan. There remains question marks over the futures of Karlan Grant and Steve Mounie,

Meanwhile, forgotten players like Flo Hadergjonaj and Ramadan Sobhi have their future up in the air after loan spells away from the club and neither has been assigned a squad number for the forthcoming season. Pipa played a vital role in helping Spain’s under-21s seal a key victory on Thursday night.

The versatile right-back played the full 90 minutes as his national side sealed a 1-0 win away to Macedonia.

weeks. It’s clearly been a really difficult period for him and I think the last few days have been very important for him to relax, get away from all the attention and get a rest.”

Southgate was asked about the chances of Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden and Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood facing Iceland in the Nations League today and, although he did not offer any hints about selection, he did say he would have no qualms about playing any of the youngsters in his squad.

“We’d have no hesitation in playing any of the players with us,” he said.

■■Huddersfield Town boss Carlos Corberan takes fitness seriously.

There is a reason he has his players doing long sessions at Canalside.

The Spaniard wants to make Town fit enough to be able to carry out his style of football.

And part of that means double sessions and practice, practice, practice.

Corberan believes the relentless nature of the Championship especially in this most condensed of seasons means you cannot afford to let fatigue kick in.

Should Town overcome Rochdale in today’s EFL Cup first round tie then they could play as many as seven games this month.

Corberan told the Examiner: “It’s something we need, to be ready to beat the fatigue that can be created by so many games, but at the same time depending on how you play the games you can feel different types of fatigue.

“The idea is first and foremost to have adaptation to the situation of playing a couple of games per week.

“Something positive if you continue in this competition is it allows you to adapt better to these types of periods.

“We need to be adapted to everything that can happen during the season. We are going to try to face every game with one style, with one identity, something all clubs want to have.

“All these types of games are positive to help us to adapt fast for the real demands of the games because it’s never the same as playing a competitive game.”
