NUTCRACKERS SWEET WHEN IT COMES TO BOTTLES

-

I HAD a problem, I confided. And yes, I know, I have several. This one was about opening bottles of tonic that appear to have been attached with superglue, and defy a twist of the wrist. Nutcrackers, I was told, in the nicest possible way, would do the job.

And, in a spirit of collaboration, another reader suggested carrying a miniature Swiss Army knife with a scissor attachment, to cut open those pesky sachets of sauce and vinegar you often find in restaurants.

Which made me wonder about the fighting efficiency of the Swiss Army if their equipment was designed to facilitate easy eating in KFC.

Now other friends have been in touch. David and Beth Woodhead tell me there is no need to bother the Swiss Army for redundant knives with scissors and the legendary tool for extracting boy scouts from the hooves of horses.

“A regular haunt for Beth and me is The Kingfisher chippie and restaurant at Crigglestone,” says David.

“It’s on the Denby Dale road on the outskirts of Wakefield.

“It’s a grand operation for both eat out or in. Their master stroke is a splendid selection of sauces and condiments, along with a pair of children’s craft scissors.”

How clever. Craft scissors to save the unwary from cutting themselves.

Perhaps someone should notify the Swiss Army.

David and Beth add, with the culinary experience of years serving top class food in their former hostelries of The Coach and Horses and The Jacob’s Well in Honley: “Their ‘secret batter’ is up there with the finest.”
