MOTORWAY MADNESS Police officer clocks four drivers doing more than 100mph on M62 in one day

- By NICK LAVIGUEUR

FOUR motorists were caught doing well in excess of 100mph on the M62 on Sunday.

West Yorkshire Police traffic cop PC Martin Willis, aka ‘Motorway Martin,’ has been posting the speeds of drivers he snares when on duty.

And Sunday’s haul of law breakers was one of the worst of what appears to be a growing problem during the coronavirus era.

“Another selection of crazy speeds recorded on the M62 tonight,” he wrote as he posted images of his speed gun clocking drivers at 143mph, 119mph, 111mph and 103mph - the first being more than double the speed limit.

All four drivers are now at risk of a hefty fine and possibly a driving ban.

It was a bad weekend for speeding as Motorway Martin also caught someone doing 110mph just 30 seconds after he had positioned himself in his usual spot on the M62 on Saturday night.

Members of the public were similarly unimpressed with the drivers disregard for laws or safety. Responding to him on Twitter, one wrote: “People driving at those types of speeds should be considered for a custodial sentence. The consequences of a crash at that velocity would be fatal for all.”

Another commented: “Absolute madness, no wonder so many fatal RTCs on roads these days. Should get instant ban for driving at these speeds.”

Meanwhile, many commented on the growing levels of high speeds stops being publicised by the police.

One said: “Has anyone else noticed since lockdown stopped that driving has been terrible?”

The quartet of speeders comes just a day after the Roads Policing Unit caught another motorist doing 117mph near Scammonden.

That driver was uninsured and had 14 points already on his licence. He has been reported to court and is expected to lose his licence for a considerable time.
