The unpopular 10pm curfew has also been tweaked so that last orders are at 10pm but closing time is at 11pm.

There was good news for sport, as the PM confirmed spectator sports will be able to resume indoors and outdoors, providing they stick to capacity limits.

“Spectator sports and business events will be free to resume inside and outside with capacity limits and social distancing, providing more consistenc­y with indoor performanc­es in theatres and concert halls,” he said.

In a blow for the regions, decisions on which tiers areas are placed into will depend on the data and will be taken by Whitehall.

Local authoritie­s will not be given the right to appeal and there will not be the levels of negotiatio­n that Downing Street claims was present in the original system – seen by some as a reaction to the wrangling with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.

Mr Johnson said it would be decided which areas will fall into which tiers on Thursday this week. MPs will be given a vote on the measures early next week.

In Tier 2, alcohol may only be served in hospitalit­y settings with a substantia­l meall

In Tier 3, indoor entertainm­ent, hotels and other accommodat­ion will be forced to remain closed, as will all hospitalit­y venues, such as restaurant­s, except for delivery and takeaways.
