Watson out of his comfort zone

-

NEW Giants coach Ian Watson says he left Salford Red Devils because he was wary of complacency setting in.

Watson said the appeal of moving to the Giants proved too much.

In an interview with the League Express, Watson said: “Coaches can be worried about how long they stay at the club.

“After the last two years we were comfortable with where we are at Salford, but the one thing I was educated to understand was that after comfortable comes complacency, so moving now means I won’t get anywhere near that.

“I’m not saying I would have got there at all, but the timing of Huddersfield coming in, and looking at the club and what you can potentially achieve, it outweighed the reasons to stay at Salford.”

Since joining the Giants, Watson has made no secret of the fact the Academy in place at the club was one of the key things that attracted him to the job.

And although he told League Express he “doesn’t know” if he’d taken Salford as far as he could, it’s clear that for a coach excited about the potential of young players, the youth setup at Huddersfield was a major factor in Watson’s move.
