B team players making a real buzz
drop deep, it allows the Terriers to utilise the pace of Koroma up top.
Of course, when this is done, Koroma is often the only player ahead of Campbell, which tests the former Sunderland forward’s fitness and appetite to burst forward and potentially finish an attack he started.
Thankfully for Huddersfield, he has proven himself more than willing in this regard.
In one example against Forest, Campbell dropped deep to the centre circle to receive possession. With the ball at his feet, there are four Huddersfield players ahead of him, but he chooses the right pass by sliding the ball into Koroma.
Having played the pass, there is one thing on Campbell’s mind – get to Forest’s penalty area.
A STRoNG Huddersfield Town B team ran out deserved winners in their latest outing as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0.
Among the onlookers at Canalside was Town coach Carlos Corberan.
A number of first-teamers started the game against the owls, including goalkeeper Joel Pereira, midfielder Alex Vallejo and defenders Demeaco Duhaney and Rarmani EdmondsGreen.
As Koroma lays it off to Harry Toffolo, Campbell gives everything he has to provide a target for a cross.
Unfortunately, the cross never arrives. That attack broke down due to a rush of blood to Toffolo’s head, but he would never have had the chance to shoot had it not been for Campbell’s tenacity and positional awareness.
Of course, there are times when Campbell’s endeavours are rewarded. Against Bristol City, Campbell again dropped deep and anticipated a second ball. Recognising an opportunity to attack quickly, he swiftly moved the ball on to Mbenza with a pass from his outstretched right foot.
From there, Mbenza was able to scamper down the right flank before finding Koroma at the far post, who
The latter pair played 45 minutes before being subbed at the interval.
The first half ended goalless but Town fashioned plenty of chances, with Kieran Phillips volleying wide and Vallejo also coming close.
Phillips, who was on the bench for the first team’s draw at Wycombe on Tuesday night, opened the scoring with a deft finish on the hour mark after Jaden Brown teed him up.
It was another example of Phillips’ prowess in front of goal and will only strengthen the calls made no mistake. Campbell’s energy and enthusiasm have certainly not gone unnoticed this season with Corberan recently praising the one-time England international’s efforts while deputising for Ward.
However, while Campbell’s selflessness is admirable, he has been shot-shy in recent weeks with only five efforts on goal in his last five starts.
Ultimately, he is in the team to score and with Ward having appeared as a substitute in the last three league games on his return from injury, Campbell knows he faces stiffer competition.
But if he can find a way to ally his build-up contributions with a killer instinct in front of goal, he could prove vital to Huddersfield’s season. for him to get a chance in the first XI.
Phillips’ opener was added to just seven minutes later. Substitute Will McCamley doubled the advantage with a simple finish.
And Town added the icing on the cake with a late third when
Kit Elliott slid home after good work from Brahima Diarra.
Vallejo will have benefited from another intense work-out as he continues to stake his claim for a Terriers debut.
Speaking about Vallejo earlier this week, Corberan said: “We want to adapt him to the Championship demands. What we are doing with him is like a pre-season. We are using the B team to give him more minutes.
“If everything goes well, he will play 90 minutes in the next B team game. That will help us analyse how he is and to help him to be more ready to compete.”
Pereira was dropped back to the bench for Tuesday night’s game at Adams Park after a debut to forget last weekend.
But he kept a clean sheet for the B team, making an impressive save.
