Town aren’t expected to do much business, with the B team expected to fill any short-term gaps in the squad that come about through injury or illness. Short of Aarons picking up a serious injury in the meantime or Mo Salah suddenly unexpected­ly becoming available, it’s expected the Aarons deal will be tied up fairly swiftly once the window opens.

Even without Hodgkinson’s confirmati­on over Aarons’ status as the club’s top target, it’s painfully obvious they are short of a winger.

Every other position has two senior players available plus a solid B team option as cover, but on the flanks Town have just Adama Diakhaby as back-up to Isaac Mbenza and Josh Koroma, with perhaps the most promising academy winger Micah Obiero currently out on loan with Carlisle United.

Matty Daly, Juninho Bacuna and Pipa have, therefore, all had to fill in at various points this season, with a wingerless 3-5-2 system also experiment­ed with on occasion.

Having Danny Ward back as another option at centre-forward might make that formation an even more attractive option for Carlos Corberan over the coming games.

We have no doubt Town already have several names in mind if Aarons can’t be done. No scouting team in the land ever leaves it at just one target.
