Parks helping us through dark days of pandemic

-

BIRTHDAYS: James Galway, flutist, 81; Sir Geoff Hurst, former footballer, 79; Kim Basinger, actress, 67; Teri Hatcher, actress, 56; David Harewood, actor, 55; Sinead O’Connor, singer, 54; Dominic Monaghan, actor, 44; Nicki Minaj, singer, 38.

FOLLOWING the interesting letter from Pete Fawcett on Saturday, it is important to acknowledge how valuable our parks are at present.

I particularly use Greenhead and Beaumont parks. During the virus crisis, with people needing to walk in open spaces, the parks have been a huge benefit and are enjoyed by all ages.

On Sunday I went to Beaumont with my family and even on a dull wet winter day, the park was crowded with people taking their leisure and exercise. The Friends (all volunteers) were providing a welcome refreshment service of hot drinks etc. Greenhead also has useful support from a Friends group who help to keep the place attractive and up to a good standard.

Ravensknowle has a nice little museum where we can take the children on a rainy afternoon. We have to remember that the council have had a series of cuts in their budgets and cannot do everything they used to.

These are all public amenities inherited largely from the Victorians but still much appreciated in these dark days. How about a nice new cafe on top of Castle Hill ?

Barrier and cafe will not solve problems

THE barrier, which is to be erected “immediately “, blocking access, at night, to Castle Hill will be a complete waste of taxpayers’ money!

If, as stated in The Examiner, drug-dealing is taking place, the dealers and their clients will park below and walk up the dirt road. Anyone wishing to discharge fireworks, the next big event being New Year’s Eve, will do likewise! The temptation is too great. Unless of course they demolish the barrier.

There are always anti-social persons who will do as they please.

A barrier will not stop such people. But, then , what does “immediately” mean? Will that be before New Year’s Eve ? or after? The council giving permission to build on the Hill is a really grave mistake. They will say the presence of people, at the “cafe” will dissuade the erstwhile drug-dealer, the firework discharger and the would-be kite flier! Think again!

This will only encourage those who go to the Hill for nefarious pleasures and give them an excuse to be there! The barrier, of course, will have to be removed so why erect it in the first place?

The customers of the cafe will have the right to be there, and who in their right-mind would challenge a set of determined ne’er do wells bent on causing mayhem? No , the problems will not be solved by a barrier and will be exacerbated by the cafe.

Viz a vis the building decision I trust Mr Jenrick has been made aware of the many objections made against this permission by the public of Huddersfield and the various societies concerned?

If it’s not the Council conspiring to destroy our heritage, it’s morons.
