URGENT action should be taken to improve road safety at a notorious blackspot after a car crashed into a wall close to Meltham Golf Club, residents have urged.

A man who took a photograph of the incident, which occurred yesterday at Thick Hollins Road, said: “School kids wait on [that] spot for the bus.”

In an appeal to Kirklees Council on Twitter, he added: “This is recently the second time this wall has been struck. Look at this before someone gets killed.”

Kirklees councillor, Terry Lyons, (Holme Valley North, Independent), said: “Locals call it ‘Crash Corner’ or ‘Hellfire Corner’ and I’m afraid nine times out of 10 these accidents are caused by motorists speeding and that’s something you can’t legislate for. I have lived in Meltham for nearly 50 years and it’s been a problem all that time. I have been asking for improvements for the entire time I have been a councillor.”

Last month Meltham Town Council did its bit to try to stop speeding in the area after it launched a ‘No need to speed’ poster competition to encourage drivers to stick to the speed limit. Meltham resident Richard Noon said: “There have been a number of collisions at this crossroads over the years – it would be correct to call it an ‘accident blackspot.’

“It is a complex set of junctions, further complicated by poor visibility and a high volume of vehicles, speed of vehicles in the area further adds to this complexity.

“I’m not aware of the circumstances of this most recent incident so it would be unfair to comment on it.

“More generally, I am aware that local residents have made the ward councillors aware of these issues, a

meeting was held last week with Kirklees Council Highways to discuss alterations to this junction, amongst other issues.

“Local residents have put forward suggestions for improvements and some of these have been tabled for further consideration.”

Kirklees Council has been contacted for comment.
