THE government has revealed that £1.6 million is to be spent on the demolition and reconstruction of a learning centre at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The measures are part of a massive nationwide scheme that will see £600m invested to tackle critical maintenance work.

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital, has been handed £4.6m in total for essential works.

CHFT was approached for comment for more details of its plans.

Overall, the North East and Yorkshire have been allocated £85m for 291 maintenance projects across 33 Trusts.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals has been handed the biggest sum for repairs in West Yorkshire, £11.2m, followed by Mid Yorkshire Hospitals, which runs Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury hospitals with £4.7m

The funding has been released to 178 NHS Trusts to cover almost 1,800 maintenance projects. The projects are now underway and will be completed by March 2021.

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock said: “Alongside delivering on our manifesto commitment to build 40 new hospitals and 20 major hospital upgrades across the country, this investment will help our NHS build back better.

“These crucial maintenance projects will deliver immediate benefits and provide NHS staff with the facilities they need to provide world-class care to their patients this winter, helping ensure the NHS is always there for you when you need it.”

The Department for Health said yesterday’s announcement is on top of an additional £450m investment from government to improve hospital A&Es this winter by expanding waiting areas and increasing the number of treatment cubicles, helping to boost A&E capacity by providing additional space, reducing overcrowding and improving infection control measures.

These crucial maintenance projects will deliver immediate

benefits.
