Ryan Scho proud to play for Town

GOALKEEPER Ryan Schofield has spoken of his pride at playing for his hometown club.

The 21-year-old played an instrument­al role in Huddersfie­ld Town’s 2-0 win over Watford over the weekend. He made a number of vital saves to help the Terriers record a fourth successive home victory.

Schofield has made an impressive start to his Huddersfie­ld career, conceding just three goals and keeping four clean sheets in his six starts.

“It’s a dream to play for this club for me right mentality and effort for the team.

“You look at the effort of Campbell and Mbenza and that of the midfielder­s, O’Brien, Eiting and Hogg and their work through the middle playing against some talented players. Our full-backs, Toffolo and Pipa, were also playing against some very good players.

“Then there was the concentrat­ion and effort of Naby Sarr and Edmonds-Green and especially for me, Ryan Schofield, who was one of the most important players. and an honour,” he said. “Whenever I put the shirt on it’s just massive pride and enjoyment. It’s brilliant to be out there.”

The England Under-20 internatio­nal heaped praise on his defence following backto-back shut-outs.

“At Coventry, the lads were brilliant, and I didn’t have to do much,” he said. “I had to make a couple of saves (against Watford), but I have to thank the lads again, they were brilliant and helped me out massively.”

“For me, you cannot individual­ise the victory with one player. Schofield did a very good performanc­e, but I cannot say Campbell, Hogg and any other player were less important for the team.

“I cannot say we have a first keeper, because the three keepers that we have must be effective. We have three very good keepers and I am very comfortabl­e.

“I was delighted with the awareness, community (spirit) and sacrifices that they (the team) gave.”

Corberan has given his players two days off to rest and recuperate ahead of the busy Christmas period. After the trip to Oakwell, Town face a home double-header against Blackburn Rovers and Reading. fired them ahead in the ninth minute after a mistake from Ben Foster before Etienne Capoue inexplicab­ly miscued Isaac Mbenza’s corner into his own goal to double the Terriers’ advantage.

Schofield excelled, making two excellent saves to deny Andre Gray. But Town stood firm to return to winning ways.

“I think the lads were brilliant going forward and defending,” said Schofield, who is vying with Ben Hamer and Joel Pereira for the starting spot. “I mean look at the effort at the end - lads winning headers, everything. It was an excellent performanc­e.”
