YORKSHIRE was facing a Boxing Day battering today as Storm Bella swept across the country

Weathermen were predicting gusts of 80mph and heavy rain until tomorrow.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for wind for the whole of England and Wales from 3pm today until noon tomorrow.

Inland areas could expect gusts between 50mph and 60mph with the potential for 60mph to 70mph in some areas.

Hills and coastal areas would see even stronger winds of up to 80mph.

To add to the wind, forecasters were also predicting periods of heavy, intense, rain which, combined with the winds, would cause hazardous driving conditions.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wardle said: “Conditions will turn very unsettled with a large area of low pressure sweeping across the UK. Very strong winds will impact much of England and Wales.

The Met Office storm warning reads: “Inland gusts of 50-60mph are likely with a few spots likely to see 60-70 mph for a time.

“Hills and particularly coasts exposed to the southwesterly winds will see a few gusts of 70-80 mph. In addition to the strong winds, a period of heavy, squally rain is expected and may prove an additional hazard.” Storm Bella was predicted
