MBE shows we won’t be ignored, insists Burrows

CARLOS CORBERAN has singled out his assistant Narcis Pelach for praise after seeing his side score from a corner for the third successive game.

Naby Sarr’s opener in the 2-1 win against Blackburn was the latest in a sequence after Rarmani Edmonds-Green’s first ever goal for the club against Barnsley at the weekend and the Etienne Capoue own goal against Watford the previous week.

And the Huddersfield Town boss has revealed that he has Pelach to thank for helping bring the best out of the players from dead balls – an area of much improvement this season having been a big area of underperformance for Town last season.

Corberan explained: “I think we need to use all the options we have from a set pieces point of view because we are know they are one situation that can help us to unbalance the game.

“We have one specialist in the staff – which is Narcis – in these types of situations. I’m very happy because he’s doing the job that he can with the training sessions we have, which is not a lot between games.”

Corberan then joked: “He takes a lot of responsibilities but I always know everything he’s doing – it’s like, I can’t leave him to do whatever he wants because you know, maybe he will put the keeper sometimes on the ball to try to score! So we try to stop him a little bit.

“We try to analyse very well the opponents and sometimes we don’t get anything out of it but sometimes like the last two games it works – either with more associations and actions [like against Barnsley] or sometimes it works very well just with two actions [like against Blackburn].

“I’m happy with the players for finding these solutions and at the same time for Narcis because the work he does is very high.”

Sarr’s header off Isaac Mbenza’s corner was the sixth goal Town have scored from a set piece this season.

I’m very happy because he’s doing the job with the training sessions we have, which is not a lot.

ROB BURROW hopes his MBE in the New Year Honours list will give comfort to fellow motor neurone disease sufferers and reassure them that their plight will not be ignored.

The 38-year-old former Leeds Rhinos player was diagnosed with the degenerative and life-limiting condition in 2019. The MBE is in recognition of his services to his sport but also respects how he has raised awareness of MND during the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “It is truly humbling to be awarded an MBE and I would like to thank everyone who has made this possible.

“2020 has taught us all to appreciate the gifts we have and it is my honour and privilege to accept this award on behalf of all the MND community.

“I hope it gives people hope that we are not ignored and the drive for more research and support to end MND will not stop.

“I would like to thank my teammates, coaches and opponents throughout my playing career.

“They shaped me into the man I am.

“The way the rugby league community has come together over the last 12 months to support me and my family speaks volumes about how special our sport is.”

Burrow’s former team-mate Kevin Sinfield has helped his friend’s campaign to raise funds and awareness by completing seven marathons in seven days – with the total raised now over £2.6million.
